Learning Year-Round with SPSF
It's summer break, but learning is year-round! This week, Global Saskatoon stopped by our Central Office to find out what initiatives the Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation has on during the summer months, and what programs they're preparing for in the fall.
Zeba Ahmad, CEO of Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation, spoke about what drives SPSF's programming and what initiatives are coming soon.
Camp Brain Power - Avoiding the “Summer Slide"
During the summer break, kids are at risk of the “summer slide" – when important learning is forgotten during a break from classes. This means that students who experience difficulty reading in early grades can fall behind in ways that make future grades more challenging.
Camp Brain Power aims to give students a boost in reading skills over the summer so that they come back in September energized and equipped to learn. The camp makes learning fun with plenty of outdoor activities, crafts, and games. This year, the camp has a special focus on community – activities will focus on building friendships, and kids will have the opportunity to connect with their neighbourhood communities.
Other Programs
Camp Brain Power is one of many programs headed by the SPSF.
Page Turners, their flagship program, matches kids in Grades 1 -3 with highly experienced tutors to work on crucial reading skills. This program takes place during the school year, and provides months' worth of learning condensed into just a few weeks!
The SPSF also provides Canpotex Cheer Crates to students during extended school breaks. These packages contain food, fun activities, and essentials for families.
A Big Thank-You
Zeba also thanked community members and businesses whose support make SPSF programming possible, including BHP and TD Ready Commitment for their support of Camp Brain Power.
