Early Learning FAQs
Who is eligible for prekindergarten?
The Saskatchewan Ministry of Education's prekindergarten program is for three- and four-year-old children.
What are the language options for prekindergarten?
English is the language of instruction in most programs. There is a Cree language program at wâhkôhtowin School and a Michif language program at Westmount Community School. There are no French Immersion prekindergarten programs.
Where should I register my child for prekindergarten?
Prekindergarten students can register at any school of their choice. However, most students register at the school that serves the neighbourhood where they live, also known as their catchment area. Please note that priority will be given to students who live in the neighbourhood.
A list of schools offering prekindergarten can be found here. The School Locator tool can also help you identify the schools serving your neighbourhood.
How do I register my child for prekindergarten?
Students interested in prekindergarten must apply before registering as spaces are limited.
To apply for a prekindergarten program, please contact the school where the program is offered. A list of our schools and their contact information can be found here.
When can I register my child for prekindergarten?
Families are welcome to submit a prekindergarten application in the spring. Applications are also accepted throughout the year.
When will I know if my child is accepted?
Applications are reviewed by the school team. Families will be notified of their child's placement in prekindergarten at the beginning of June. If the prekindergarten class applied for is full, you will be contacted to discuss potential options. If you are registering after the school year has begun, schools will be able to inform you if there is availability.
How many spots are available in prekindergarten?
Space is limited to 16 students per class and enrolment is prioritized for children who would benefit most from enhanced programming.
Can my child be placed on a waitlist?
Yes, we keep a waitlist for when spots become available. If families are interested, these waitlists may be shared with other schools with openings.
What are the hours of prekindergarten?
The hours of prekindergarten are determined by each individual school. Please contact the school directly for more information.
Are we able to schedule a school tour?
Yes, schools welcome families to visit and ask questions. To schedule a tour, please contact the school directly.
What school supplies are needed?
School supply lists for each school are available on school websites in June. In addition to the supplies listed on your school website, please ensure your child has a backpack, change of clothes and indoor shoes.
Is transportation available?
Information about transportation can be found here. Please note there are no buses during the lunch hour.
Can my child access multiple early learning programs at the same time?
If a child is in an early learning program (e.g., preschool), they should not register for an additional program (e.g., prekindergarten).
